Frequently
Asked Questions
1.
Are you the Oregon branch of the AMTA?
No. We are not an insurance company. We are not
a branch of anything else. We are an independant association of Oregon-licensed
massage therapists.
2.
Am I required to have insurance to practice?
The
Oregon Board of Massage Therapists sets the rules & regulations
for licensing. Here is a link to their site regarding rules & laws:
http://www.oregon.gov/OBMT/lawsrulespolicies.shtml.
3.
I have more insurance questions. Who do I ask?
If you need insurance, we recommend The
Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals, ABMP. If you are
an OMTA member, they will give you a $50.00 discount.
If
you have questions related to insurance and Oregon law, contact the
OBMT.
4.
I want a massage, but not a sexual massage.
We require all of our
members to sign an Ethics Statement, which
includes the phrase: "I shall not initiate
or tolerate sexual activity, sexual suggestiveness or sexual advertising
in my professional practice." Our members only give therapeutic
or relaxing non-sexual massages.
5.
I'm looking for a massage therapist in my area. How do I know if they
are licensed?
We require our members
to provide us with licensing information. You can be assured that you
will receive a professional massage from our members. You can search
our membership by City or look at our entire
list of businesses to find a professional
licensed massage therapist in your area.
6.
I picked up a massage business card at an event. How do I know if they
are licensed?
The OBMT has a License
Verification page on their website. All Oregon-licensed massage
therapists are required to provide their license numbers in their advertising,
including business cards. If you see an ad or discover a massage practitioner
who you believe is not licensed, notify the OBMT.
7.
How do I get Continuing Education (CEs)?
We
provide CEs at our Annual
Conference in October, at our Spring Conference in May, and soon
we may offer a Winter Conference in January. We also provide CEs at
some of our Area meetings,
and at various other events
we sponsor.
8.
How do I get an Oregon license?
All the information you'll need is available on the Oregon Board of
Massage Therapists' website. Please click here.
9. I'm licensed
in another state, so am I also licensed in Oregon?
The State of Oregon does not automatically recognize any out of State
license, however a "State Indorsement" application will be
reviewed on an individual basis. The Board may grant a license by indorsement
without further examination to applicants who are currently licensed
in another state, provided the educational requirements of your current
license meet or exceed the State of Oregon's minimum requirements. Please
click the following link: http://www.oregonmassage.org/licensure.php
10. How many
CEs do I need? Why do I need to get continuing education?
The Oregon Board of Massage Therapists has rules and regulations that
require every LMT to submit proof of continuing education at renewal
time. As licensed massage therapists we are required to familiarize
ourselves with those rules. Any questions you may have regarding continuing
education requirements, including numbers of hours, are available here.
11. How do
I know if a class I take will be accepted by the OBMT?
All CEs provided at OMTA events, including our Conferences, some of
our Area meetings, and at various other events we sponsor are accepted
by the OBMT. You can also check with any Massage School to find out
what classes they offer. When in doubt and for further information,
please check here.
12. How do
I join OMTA?
Print
an application to mail or contact our
Membership director, Heather
Bennouri at info@bennouri.net.
