Touchstone was dreamed into existence by a group of volunteers who formed the editorial committee. They were: Susan Kerr Shawn, the first editor, Ute Munger, Steven Woolpert, Beverly Reeves, Peter Frothingham and Cliff Williams. Pamela & John Haskin did the mailings, and Suzanne Carlson wrote a series of articles in the early issues. Other major contributors in the early years were Toni Barrientos and Tom Miller. Susan Kerr Shawn was editor until 1997. Toni Baillie of Paisley was editor from 1998 to 2006. Heather Bennouri is currently the Touchstone Editor.
Touchstone has a long tradition of service to the massage community. It is a forum for ideas rather than advocacy. It is also a way for the Executive Committee to communicate with the membership from Paisley to Portland, from Ashland to Joseph.
Articles through the years have been on a wide range of topics: scope of practice, marketing, awareness, conditions and techniques. Members have written articles about the changing massage laws, sexuality and massage, defining the market, client sensitivity, massaging overweight body types, addiction and massage, cardiovascular conditions, chronic pain, cancer, AIDS, infant massage, proper body techniques, paraffin bath, abdominal massage and nearly every technique you can think of.
In 2007, we began publishing Touchstone in an electronic format.
